Daniel Koehler geeft lezing over: ‘Ideology and Counterterrorism: Challenging Assumptions About Beliefs in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremis,’

What if our assumptions about ideology in counterterrorism are wrong?

On Thursday, 25 June, Dr. Daniel Koehler (Competence Center Against Extremism, Baden-Württemberg) will challenge conventional approaches to preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) in his lecture:

“Ideology and Counterterrorism: Challenging Assumptions About Beliefs in Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism”

The lecture will provide an overview of the concept of “ideology” through a political science lens and explore how it is typically applied in counterterrorism and P/CVE work, including deradicalization and disengagement programs.

Dr. Koehler will introduce the audience to Michael Freeden’s concept of ideological morphology and discuss its practical use in P/CVE. Furthermore, he will address the role of ideological knowledge as a determinant of the degree of violent extremist radicalization and argue for a paradigm shift in how we understand and handle the term “ideology” in counterterrorism.
