The promise of resilience has become a quest for many organizations. But the research on resilience has not been particularly informative for those practitioners who seek to enhance the resilience of their organization. In this chapter, we describe the three theoretical pillars of the ideal-typical Resilient Organization: high reliability, crisis management, and institutional leadership. We explore what these distinct literatures offer for the design of the Resilient Organization. The High Reliability Organization (HRO) literature explains how organizations can build a culture that promotes vigilance and quick action. The crisis management literature describes the organizational mechanisms that must be employed to deal with emerging threats. The institutional literature helps us understand how organizational leaders can stay the course in the face of disruptive threats.
