What drives terrorists to commit violent acts in the name of a higher authority? Join renowned historian and terrorism expert Prof. dr. Beatrice de Graaf at the book symposium for her latest work: The Radical Redemption Model. Terrorist Beliefs and Narratives.
In this symposium, De Graaf delves into the complex psychology and belief systems behind religious terrorism. Drawing on powerful first-hand interviews with convicted jihadists and extremists from the Netherlands, Syria, Pakistan, and Indonesia, de Graaf reconstructs compelling narratives of surrender, struggle, sacrifice – and the elusive search for redemption.
Through these personal stories, De Graaf explores how radical beliefs take root, how they evolve, and what happens when the hope for redemption collapses. Her analysis offers new insights into the intersection of religion, radicalization, and terrorism.
Prof. dr. Dame Louise Richardson from the Carnegie Cooperation of New York will be present online as honorary guest to give her reflections on the book. A roundtable discussion will follow, featuring Prof. dr. Rik Peels, Prof. dr. Bart Schuurman and Prof. dr. Michael Kowalski.
